Dessert Contest New This Year At Harper County Bullseye BBQ
We are less than a week away from this year’s edition of Harper County Bullseye BBQ. And, in keeping with tradition, we have added one new event this year, our Saturday dessert contest. Here are the rules and we would really like to have some Harper County folks join in:
The entry fee is $25 – Enter online at www.harperbullseyebbq.com/contests
You can enter any sweet creation, it just needs to be homemade
You need to turn in for judging at least six samples of your delectable wonder
Turn-in is at the Harper Senior Center on Saturday from 9:00 am to 2:05 pm
Winners to be announced at Saturday’s award ceremony, which starts at 4:00 pm at the Harper Fair Barn
Here is a rundown on what’s going on with Bullseye BBQ this week.
We start decorating and getting the Fair Barn ready on Wednesday at 4:00 pm. If you want to come help, we can always use an extra hand.
Teams, we have 43 this year as of print time (up from 38 last year), so we are getting a little cozy at the Fairgrounds. Teams will be arriving as early as Thursday. We have five teams from Colorado, three from Missouri, and one from South Dakota. They have long drives and plan to arrive a little ahead of time.
Friday morning starts registration for all of our contests. Check-in is at the Fair Barn, northeast entrance off of Washington. Most of the teams will arrive by noon, so things will be hopping by then.
The Kids’ Q and SCA-sanctioned steak cook-off are both Friday afternoon/evening. Also Friday night is our steak dinner and it is open to the public. David Earls will be playing that evening and it will be a busy one. Dinner is $20 per person and proceeds go toward our charity project, giving back to Harper County charities. You need to go online to sign-up: www.harperbullseyebbq.com/contests. We will be having the Golden Ticket contest again this year. For all paid dinner tickets, each is an entry into the Golden Ticket contest. We will pull one ticket for a cash prize. Last year, the winner received $400!
The steak cook-off awards are Friday night. Top two spots get an entry into the 2017 World Steak Cook-off Championships coming up in Fort Worth.
Saturday morning will come early with coffee on for the cooks at 5:00 am. Right after that is cooks’ breakfast and then setup will begin for the Fall Festival. This year, we are sharing quarters with vendors and hope that is great for them and for creating an even bigger draw for our Saturday BBQ lunch. This year, the lunch will be cooked by SPK Grocery and again hosted by Wheatland Electric as part of their Cram the Van series. That will start at 11:30 am and run until about 1:00 pm or until they run out of food. Lunch is free in exchange for cans to “cram the van.”
The BBQ contest is Saturday with first turn-in at noon. After judging is finished and vendors take down from the Fall Festival, the awards ceremony is at 4:00 pm. A new item this year will be our meat auction. We are asking the teams to donate meat, which we will then auction off at awards. This will give people an opportunity to taste the awesome BBQ cooked by these teams while giving back to the community. As we have in the past, we will be donating to lots of Harper County charities after Bullseye BBQ is over. Those charities include the Boys Scouts, 4-H, Chaparral Key Club, Chaparral Shooting Club, Anthony and Harper food banks, and others.
Try to make it out to Harper County Bullseye BBQ this year. Should be a fun time. And, remember the dessert contest. We have nice prizes, including some cash. And, of course, glory for the winner.
